Toronto Neighborhood Spotlight – Cabbage Town – South St. James Town
Cabbagetown’s name derives from the Irish immigrants who moved to the neighborhood beginning in the late 1840s, said to have been so poor that they grew Cabbage in their front yards. Today the Neighborhood has plenty of small-town charm thanks to unique indie shops and cafes along Parliament Street, and the lovingly restored late-Victoria homes and lane way cottages. The revitalization of Regent Park has also beautified the formerly gritty borders. Lots of TTC stops make accessing transit a breeze.
The neighborhood is home to many artists, musicians, journalists and writers. Other residents include professors, doctors and social workers, many affiliated with the nearby University of Toronto. Proximity to the financial district and downtown core have also made the area popular with other professionals such as lawyers, management consultants and those in financial services. Local attractions include Jet Fuel where they’re so hyped on caffeine they refuse to stock decaf. Nearby Riverdale Park is home to the Riverdale Farmers’ Market, one of Toronto’s best, each Tuesday from May through October. And if talking to the farmers doesn’t feel like you’re close enough to the source, there’s always the family friendly Riverdale Farm which affords a more intimate encounter.
Property prices in this area has gone up quite rapidly and is now considered one of the more trendy and hip areas in Toronto.
